Oh sh!t Tecmo Bowl! I'll definitely be trying this out a bit later.

Let me know what you think...

I'll be tweaking the CPU AI and gameplay when I get a chance, but it's hard for me to tell if the game's too hard/too easy since I know how all the logic works and can take advantage of it to some extent...

I can feel the retro goodness oozing from this one. Even if you hadn't mentioned Tecmo Bowl in the description, I would have noticed the influence. That's a good thing. It was fun, and I'm really glad you added a single player mode.

One thing I immediately noticed was that it's hard to complete a pass without it being intercepted. That, and it's impossible to catch the guy running with the ball since he's faster than everybody else.

Derek,

Just like the original, you have to only throw to the receivers that have no defender on them (the defensive back's awareness rating is used to determine how often they "blow" their coverage and don't cover a receiver. In the original, pretty much every pass is either a completion or an interception. This version has a bit more potential for incomplete passes.

There's logic in the code, so that after the ball carrier gains 20 yards past the line of scrimmage (pass or run) the player controlled defender gets a huge speed burst to catch up. No other players get this burst, so it's up to you to get free of blockers and get down the field to make the tackle. (Remember to push the X button quickly to shed blockers).

Derek,

One more thought: I considered giving all defenders that speed burst after 20 yards had been gained, but that seemed a bit too easy. I'll kick around the idea of making that change if playing defense seems too difficult... (Again, it's hard for me to tell because I know how the "innards" work - and I have many hundreds of hours of Tecmo Bowl play under my belt from my college days).

BTW, Nintendo just released Tecmo bowl for the Virtual Console on the Wii yesterday. I was very excited to have a chance to actually be able to defeat my kids in a video game (my reflexes have really degraded over the years)

Sweet!!! The original was the last football videogame I was ever any good at. I'll try this out very soon. Can't wait for the 360 version!

RetroBowl is a football game that pays homage to the original Tecmo Bowl for NES. I've tried to be true to the original game. There are a variety of teams provided and you can add your own teams and players by editing/adding config files.

Each team has different strengths and weaknesses that parallel real-life teams from the late 80's and early 90's. For example, Miami has a strong passing game but an average running game and a weak defense.

Like in the original, each team has four offensive plays (plus punt and field goal). The defensive player tries to guess the offensive play. If the guess is correct, the offensive play will be stopped cold.

Both 1 and 2 player games are supported. Instructions are available from the main menu. You must use a gamepad. The keyboard is not supported.

Both Windows and 360 versions are included.
