I think this could be really good if you multiplied everything in here by 10. I mean more enemies, more speed, more shooting action. As it is, it feels kind of empty. It's a shooter with not much to shoot at. Also, I was a little surprised that there was no collision detection between my ship and the enemies.

Thanks for the feedback. We really didn't want to make geometry wars :) The original game mechanic came from a game on the Intellivision called Tron Deadly Discs. If you've ever played that game, you'd see that Whirled! is already a lot "more", but we intend to add some elements that will give you the more you're looking for. I guess my only excuse is that there's only so much one person can do in 2 weeks :)
In terms of the collision detection - while it's certainly feasible, it's actually the intended behavior. Try using block when you are in close proximity to take out an enemy. I'll play around with it some more to see if it can be less "jarring".
Note: there are a max of 6 enemies on screen once you get the the "highest" level, and they take two shots each to kill. If you've already made it that far, I'm really quite impressed!
Thanks again. I really appreciate the input.

Hi, I got to 2000 pts and things had really started to peter out. I think you've got a pretty good base here. A couple thoughts:

-Try allowing the play area to be a bit larger than just the screen.
-I'm not a fan of the 360 firing. Restricting the firing arc would emphasize a sort of dogfighting aspect, with players chasing and dodging each other.
-The "melee" attack is cool, but a bit... overpowered. I was getting along fine just using it (shots are useful, but very much auxilliary). Perhaps speeding up shots slightly, and decreasing damage output of the melee. If thats not doable due to design constraints, perhaps making the melee not an instant kill (ie gotta grind on the hull a second or two).
- I know it's just in early stages, but more more more. More variety, more enemies.

Keep it up, this looks to be fun :)

What did you change to remove the flipping from one side of the screen to the other?

Whirled! is a mod of the Spacewar Game as an entry to the Dream Build Play Warm-Up competition. The main features are:

Cooperative Control:
While Whirled! is a single player experience against AI controlled enemies, we implemented controls and game play that make it not only possible but advantageous to play cooperatively with a friend. This is done by having both players control different aspects of the same ship. We've called this "Cooperative Control" and is really the intended way to play.

Single "Bullet":
Whirled! is a strategic shooter where each ship has only a single ballistic "Blade" to use to attack opponents. Firing and recalling the blade is done with the Right trigger; however, the blade is omni-directional and the player has the option of controlling the launch direction by using the Right analog stick. The player may use the Blade in defense as well by blocking incoming blades.
